Life Dipped In Madhubani Painting

Poonam Devi is carrying the legacy of Madhubani, one of the most celebrated indigenous art forms in India. In a bid to continue its tradition to uphold folk art and support rural artisans, Ecolook tries to delve deeper into her career, experiences and the road ahead in this rare tete-a-tete.

Where are you originally from?

I am from Jitbarpur, Madhubani district, Bihar and have spent my entire childhood right there.

How did you embrace the Madhubani art?

Thanks to my mother (Chandrakala Devi is legendary name in Madhubani art history and a national awardee) our home was a hub of Madhubani art and craft. But she didn’t allow me to get involved in the first place as she was worried about my studies. So, quite secretly I started to learn Madhubani style from other people in our village. Especially the artisans who used to work with my mother. Then, one day she discovered me doing Madhubani craft. She was amazed. Asked me that how did I learn it. I told her the truth. She gave a smile and then began to guide me herself. Thus, I came into Madhubani.

That’s indeed a fascinating encounter! Tell us how you grew up as an artist?

I am blessed to get the golden opportunity to learn the intricacies of Madhubani from someone like Chandrakala Devi. I must say that I was more than lucky to have her as my teacher. I was learning religiously and growing with Madhubani with the passage of time, then I got the chance to showcase my skills in my school followed by my college. We took part in various state level and national exhibitions. I performed at Pragati Maidan on 26th January as part of the Republic Day celebrations. That was the turning point in my career. I am talking about at least twenty years back.

So, it’s been quite a long journey with Madhubani?

Yeah! It’s been more than three decades. I am still learning.

You have trained countless artisans through numerous workshops over the years. How has been the experience so far?

Oh! It feels so great while thinking about the workshops. I have worked with students all over India – National School of Drama, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Lalit Kala Academy. There must be thousands of my students, mostly women, who are surviving today being a Madhubani artisan. This very fact pleases me the most, that I managed to empower rural women with roji-roti and ensured sustainable living. All thanks to Madhubani.

It’s absolutely incredible Poonam Ji! Now you have your own art studio also?

Yes. It was my years of dream to have my own studio. It helps me to generate regular employment for fifteen artisans. We are still fighting against all odds to keep it going.

Great! How many days it takes to come up with a hand painted Madhubani saree?

It depends. Usually, twenty to twenty-five days.

Are you getting support from the government?

Yes, but only in the form of exhibitions. We haven’t got any economic support yet.

Madhubani paintings depict beautiful stories. How are they weaved?

It’s a long tradition. Often, we depict the stories of Ram-Sita, Parvati and at times stories involving Mithila along with Raja Janak, in the Madhubani creations.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to build a museum on Madhubani painting named after my mother, Chandrakala Devi. It will serve as a great learning tool for the young generation, who know little about this world-famous art tradition.

It would be a pathbreaking work indeed to archive Chandrakala Devi’s artworks. Coming to the young generation, what would be your advice as an artist?

Willingness and hard work is the key. See, here my students, all women, do the household works and then parallelly practice Madhubani art. Be self-dependent and remain original. Don’t copy. That’s all.
